Piandicastello - find out more about picturesque area of Marche

Piandicastello is a picturesque hamlet on the border of Marche and Emilia Romagna. It has about 15 houses, and our house sits just down the road a little. About 100 metres further there is a church with services every second week and beside it a small football field has been laid out - perfect for children!

The silence and the sound of the gentle breeze will be one of your memories of Piandicastello. The road is but a quiet, tarmac track.

The house is surrounded by open fields and the rolling countryside of Marche. Looking east from the house you look over the valleys down to the Adriatic - about 25 kilometres away. The skyline is dotted with mountain top villages their church spires shining in the sun. Over to the north is the spectacular sight of the three castles of San Marino which, silhouetted against the blue sky, is a view to stop and savour.

Looking west the rolling lansdcape continues with the tall, narrow Cypress trees piercing the landscapes. This is Italy at its most beautiful.

The wonderful restaurant of Osteria de Mirecul is 1 kilometre from the house and as an experience alone it is worth a visit. The place is filled with antiques and bric-a-brac providing much to discuss! Pictures of "Il Duce" juxtaposed with older farming instruments hang on the wall - very interesting ! The menu is also incredible - there isn't one !! When I go they ask "what would you like?" and suggest what is fresh that day and a recipe that you might enjoy. This is Italian eating as it should be: fresh, innovative, relaxed and based tradition. Enjoy !

There is also a typical pizzeria-type restaurant about 1.5 kilometres in the other direction - but not like Pizza Hut ! This is a privately owned restaurant where the sister of our house's previous owner makes pizzas and pasta dishes based on traditional recipes. The walk back is perfect to get rid of some of those delicious calories !

Have a look at www.piandicastello.it. It's a site run by the Osteria and has more details (in Italian) of the village and surroundings.
